During the first phase of ENGAGE, a series of public discussions/presentations were held both bicommunally and monocommunally, in an attempt to raise awareness on specific issues related to the federal system of governance. Our experience from these discussions led us to believe that people leaving in rural or distant areas were not as involved as others in the cities.
Drawing then on from lessons learned, we decided to launch a campaign that entails the team’s direct physical transportation to communities outside of Nicosia, to reach out and engage more people into the reconciliation process.
The aim is to increase dialogue with local people in selected locations and work to encourage people to engage in the process of reconciliation within their localised context. The campaign will target both rural and urban areas in a series of exploratory journeys, emphasising the work of the project in peacebuilding.
Eight journeys will be conducted, four in each community, with the locations being strategically chosen to cover local hub regions that would draw people from neighbouring areas. Specifically regions will be targeted based on local feast and celebrations times, where people will have the opportunity to listen and watch the work produced by ENGAGE and other NGOs on peace, reconciliation and active citizenship.
In general, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will be invited to participate in journeys taking place in both the Turkish Cypriot Community and the Greek Cypriot Community respectively.
